A charge starting with WPY* on your statement

WPY* means the payment was processed by WePay, a payments company that is now part of J.P. Morgan Payments.⁶ The name after WPY* is who you paid: a fundraiser, an event, a school or club, a small business. WePay said refunds come from them, not from WePay.¹²

What it looks like on a real statement

WePay’s own help article gave the format as WPY* [MERCHANT NAME].² Since 2013, people who found the charge on their card have been posting the exact line on a public forum for the phone number that often comes with it, 855-469-3729. These are lines they typed in, as they typed them:

The names are short and often cut off. The State of Delaware publishes every purchase its employees make on state cards, with the merchant name as the bank received it. When we counted on 27 September 2026 it had 753 lines starting WPY*, under 158 different names, from July 2017 to May 2025. Nearly half, 369 of them, are exactly 25 characters long: WPY* and 21 characters of name, then nothing. WPY*FIRST EDUCATIONAL RES, WPY*DELMARVA GIS CONFEREN and WPY*INTERSTATE LABOR STAN are three of them.⁷ So search for the first word or two, not the whole thing.

The rest look like WPY*DRIP CAFE (catering, $494.50, April 2024) or WPY*DELAWARE GIS (a conference, $260, May 2022). The biggest group in Delaware’s data is charities and social services, then business services, then membership organisations and schools.⁷ The newest WPY* line in that data is dated 6 May 2025, while the data itself runs to August 2026.⁷ We cannot tell from the data why they stop.

Not every WePay line starts exactly WPY*. Visit Cheyenne, a tourism board in Wyoming, tells people who registered for its conferences or bought its event tickets that the charge can read WPY-VISIT CHEYENNE, LARAMIE COUNTY TOURISM B or LARAMIE COUNTY TOURISM BOARD.¹³

How to find what it was

1. Think about donations, sign-ups and dues A crowdfunding page, a race or conference registration, school or club fees, a church, a wedding registry, an invoice from a contractor. Those are the kinds of payment WePay listed.¹ People on the 800notes page traced theirs to GoFundMe donations, a Meetup group’s dues and Color Run entries.⁸¹¹¹⁴
2. If the payment was declined, wait a week WePay said that if your payment was declined but the charge still shows, "most likely it’s just a pending authorization". The payment has not been processed, and the charge "will fall off your statement in 1-7 calendar days".⁴ If it is still there after that, treat it as a real charge.
3. Search your email for the name and the amount Search every address you use, including spam, for the first word after WPY* and for the exact amount (for example 101.00). A donation or registration almost always sends a receipt.
4. Try WePay’s charge lookup WePay ran a lookup at wepay.com/chargeinfo: you enter the email address you paid with and the last four digits of the card, and it emails you the matches.¹ It warned it would find nothing if the payment "is over six months old", if you used a different email address, or if you mistyped the digits.⁵ WePay said to type the exact email address, because the tool may not return results if it does not match.² We could not load the lookup on 27 September 2026. The last copy in the Internet Archive is from 14 January 2026. It also gave an address for questions, chargeinfo@wepay.com.⁵
5. Ask whoever you paid for the refund WePay said it does "not handle the actual fulfillment, delivery, or cancellation/reimbursement of your purchases", and that refunds come from the merchant.² For a donation to a fundraiser, it said to contact the campaign organiser "using the Contact feature on the campaign page", or the nonprofit.³ Ask in writing and keep the reply.
6. If you cannot find it, or never paid anyone, go to your bank Bring the statement line exactly as printed, the date and the amount, and what you already tried. Ask your bank what its deadline is for disputing a charge. It depends on the bank, the card network and the reason, and missing it can end your options.

WePay’s help pages for cardholders are gone

WePay had a help centre with a section called "I made a payment", for people who paid through it. The Internet Archive’s copy of 14 December 2025 still shows it. Its copy of 3 January 2026 shows a single line in its place: "WePay is now part of J.P. Morgan Payments", with links to J.P. Morgan’s business pages.⁶ The copy of 15 August 2026 is the same. The articles quoted on this page are all cited from the Internet Archive for that reason.

So the advice above is the last version WePay published, and WePay no longer publishes it. The part that does not depend on WePay is the last two steps: the business you paid, and your bank.

What about the phone number 855-469-3729?

It shows up on many WPY* lines, sometimes run into the name, as in WPY*LMHS Guitar Progra 855-469-3729 CA.⁹ Cardholders on the 800notes page have linked it to WePay since 2013.¹⁴ We did not find it on any WePay page we could read, so we do not tell you to call it. In October 2025 one commenter there wrote that they called it and it was "not a working number".¹² Use the steps above instead.

Is this fraud?

Not necessarily. In the 800notes thread, the people who later worked out what their charge was mostly found a donation or a sign-up they had forgotten.⁸¹¹¹⁴ That is a thread of volunteers, not a count.

Others reported charges they are sure they never made: two in minutes on a company card in 2019, $1,000 against a $400 balance in 2023.¹¹¹² Those are their reports, not our findings. In February 2023 someone told the Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker they paid $27 for pyjamas online to a seller that showed as WPY*Atebusiness LLC, got neither the goods nor the refund they were promised, and went to their bank.¹⁵ If you have been through the steps above and still cannot place a WPY* charge, and especially if it repeats, treat it as unauthorized: call your bank, ask for a new card, and dispute each charge.

Why this page is on a site about held money

The businesses behind WPY* lines are paid by a processor, and sometimes processors hold that money back. The incident record collects what sellers report about it, including businesses paid through WePay: one says WePay closed its account after the first customer paid and told it to wait 120 days for the money (entry HF-2026-0171). If your line starts SQ *, that one is Square; if it starts PAYPAL *, it went through PayPal; if it starts TST*, it is a restaurant that uses Toast. Other lines are in the table of statement names.
