HeldFunds An independent record of withheld funds

The incident record

Each entry below is one account of one payment account being closed with money still inside it. The entries are deliberately dry: what was held, for how long, in which country, and whether it came back.

1979 Cases documented
$12,884,112.78 Currently reported as still held
105 Confirmed released

This record opened on 7 September 2026. Its size reflects how long it has been collecting, not how often this happens. Entries are also collected by company, in the Stripe file, the Lemon Squeezy file, the PayPal file, the Shopify Payments file, the Square file and the Paddle file, and by what happened at the end of a hold, in what merchants report after day 120 and what happens when the way out of a hold is itself broken, and what happens when the hold starts at the payout bank account. Counts by company, status, stated hold and amount are in the record in numbers. File a case →

What it takes to get into this record

An entry is published only if the account comes from the person it happened to — either filed here directly, or published by them somewhere we can link to and have read in full. Second-hand summaries, screenshots without a traceable source, and anything we cannot open ourselves do not go in, however plausible they sound. A record that accepts everything is worth nothing.

Entries state what the person said happened to them. They are their reports, not our findings. If a company disputes an entry and tells us so, the dispute is published alongside it.

About the CFPB source links

44 entries below cite a complaint in the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's public complaint database. As of 16 September 2026, the search those links open returns only each complaint's metadata — product, issue, state, company response — and no longer returns the complainant's own account to us. Each of those entries was written from the complaint text read in full at that link on the day the entry was filed. Where an archived copy is linked, that copy still shows the text.
