A charge from ADOBE on your statement
ADOBE *ADOBE, ADOBE INC and ADOBE *CREATIVE CLOUD are all Adobe, the software company. The charge is a plan that renewed by itself (Creative Cloud, Photoshop, Acrobat and others), a free trial that became a paid plan, or a fee for cancelling a yearly plan early.12 The same plan can show up under a different one of these names from one month to the next: in Delaware’s card records one office’s $19.99 monthly charge went through four names in six months.6
Adobe has a tool that finds the account behind a charge from the card details alone, no sign-in needed: type in the amount and date exactly as your statement shows them.1 To stop the next charge, sign in at account.adobe.com/plans, choose Manage plan, then Cancel your plan. Adobe says most plans get a full refund if cancelled within 14 days of the first purchase; after that, a yearly plan paid monthly costs 50% of the remaining months to cancel.34
What it looks like on a real statement
Adobe’s help pages do not say what its charges are called on a statement. The State of Delaware publishes every purchase its employees make on state cards, with the merchant name as the bank received it. When we counted on 4 October 2026, 1,643 lines had a merchant name starting with ADOBE, from 29 June 2017 to 25 August 2026, bought by 53 state offices, school districts and charter schools.6
| What the statement said | Lines | When |
|---|---|---|
ADOBE INC, ADOBE INC. | 451 | 16 October 2018 to 24 August 2026, still in use. Amounts from $19.99 to hundreds of dollars |
ADOBE *ADOBE | 218 | 12 July 2022 to 25 August 2026, still in use. 117 of the 218 are from 2024 |
ADOBE *CREATIVE CLOUD, ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD | 296 | 29 June 2017 to 17 January 2024 with the star; 13 October 2019 to 25 September 2023 without it |
ADOBE *ACROPRO SUBS, ADOBE ACROPRO SUBS | 235 | Acrobat Pro. 25 July 2017 to 15 January 2024 with the star; 13 October 2019 to 10 September 2023 without it |
ADOBE *800-833-6687 | 146 | 3 September 2019 to 23 October 2024: the name carries a phone number, which is the one Adobe lists for individuals in the United States5 |
ADOBE STOCK, ADOBE *STOCK | 83 | Adobe Stock, a separate plan. 3 December 2018 to 31 December 2023 |
ADOBE | 43 | 29 June 2017 to 12 February 2026 |
ADOBE SYSTEMS INC. | 38 | 7 January to 9 October 2018 only: the company’s old name |
About 130 more lines carry the product: ADOBE *PREMIERE PRO,
ADOBE *PHOTOGPHY PLAN (spelled that way), ADOBE *EXPORTPDF SUB,
ADOBE *PDF PACK SUBS, ADOBE *SEND-FOR-SIGN,
ADOBE *ACROPRO TRIAL, ADOBE *INDESIGN and others. Your bank may
shorten the line or add a town or phone number. The Delaware data shows posted charges on
one set of cards.6
The same plan under different names
Do not take a different name for a different charge. Two examples from the Delaware data, both the same office paying the same amount on the same day of the month:
-
A charter school paid $19.99 for Acrobat on the 22nd or 23rd of every month. The line read
ADOBE *ACROPRO TRIALon 22 September 2023,ADOBE INC.on 22 October,ADOBE *ACROPRO SUBSon 22 November and 22 December,ADOBE INC.on 23 January 2024 and 22 February, thenADOBE *ADOBEfrom 23 March 2024 on.6 -
A state department paid $239.88 once a year in the middle of November: 16 November 2023 as
ADOBE INC., 15 November 2024 asADOBE *ADOBE, 15 November 2025 asADOBE INC.6
The data does not say why the name changes. What it shows is that a line you do not recognise may be the plan you already know, and that looking for last month’s exact wording in your statements can miss it.
Why it came when you did not expect it
Adobe’s own page on charges lists the usual reasons. An introductory or promotional price ended: "Introductory pricing applies only for the first year", after which the standard rate applies. A free trial ended and the paid plan began. A yearly plan paid upfront renewed. You have more than one Adobe account, bought under a different email address. Each plan is billed on its own and "cancelling one plan doesn’t cancel others": Acrobat Pro, Acrobat AI Assistant and Adobe Stock can be separate active plans.2
A charge after you cancelled is, Adobe says, usually one of three things: you cancelled after the billing date and this is the last payment for the period; you have a second active plan; or the cancellation did not go through, which you can tell by whether you got a confirmation email.2
The fee for cancelling a yearly plan
Adobe sells three kinds of plan. A yearly plan paid monthly is priced below month-to-month, and Adobe’s terms say that "after 14 days, a cancellation fee (early termination fee) of 50% of the remaining balance of the contract applies". Its example: cancel in the ninth month and you pay 50% of the three remaining months. For a yearly plan prepaid the same page says "a refund is not possible if you cancel before the year ends"; the 14-day full refund is on Adobe’s cancel page.34 A month-to-month plan converts to a free membership when cancelled.
This fee is what the US government sued over. On 13 March 2026 the Justice Department announced a proposed settlement with Adobe in a case filed in June 2024 under the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act. It said the government alleged Adobe used "fine print and inconspicuous hyperlinks" to hide the fee, and made cancelling a "convoluted and inefficient" process. Adobe was to pay $75 million in civil penalties and offer customers $75 million in free services; the order would require it to disclose any early termination fee and how it is worked out before sign-up.7
Adobe’s own page about the settlement says you are eligible if you had a Creative Cloud plan at any time between January 2019 and July 2025 and paid an early termination fee that, with your monthly fees, came to more than a month-to-month plan would have cost. It is for US customers. Eligible customers were emailed; those with an active plan got two free months credited, and former customers have until 31 December 2027 to claim two free months of one app.8 The benefit is free service, not money back.
How to find it and stop it
- Find the account Use Adobe’s charge finder and enter the details exactly as on the statement; Adobe says a charge can take up to 48 hours to appear in its system. Search your email, including spam, for "Adobe" and the amount, and check every address you might have signed up with.12
- Cancel the plan Sign in at account.adobe.com/plans, select Manage plan for the plan, then Cancel your plan, and confirm. Adobe says the option is missing while a payment is being processed or has a problem; try again after 24 hours. Look for the confirmation email. A plan bought through Apple, Google or Microsoft is cancelled there, not with Adobe.4
- Ask for the refund Within 14 days of the first purchase most plans get a full refund. Adobe says refunds usually take three to ten business days to reach the card. If you were charged a fee after 14 days, Adobe’s terms say the fee applies; ask Adobe to explain the amount, in writing, and look at whether you qualify under the settlement above.234 Adobe lists 1-800-833-6687 for individuals in the United States.5
- If nobody you know has the account, go to your bank If the charge finder finds nothing and no one near you used Adobe, treat it as fraud: ask your bank to cancel the card and dispute the charge, and ask what its deadline is. It depends on the bank, the card network and the reason, and missing it can end your options.
Is this a scam?
The name is real: these lines are Adobe’s own, and the Delaware data shows more than a thousand ordinary charges under them.6 That does not make every such charge wanted. A stolen card can pay for an Adobe plan as easily as anything else. If the charge finder and your email find nothing, it is not a renewal you forgot, and it belongs with your bank.
Why this page is on a site about held money
This site records payment companies that hold back money that belongs to someone else. Adobe is not in the incident record; this page is here so that people searching for a name on a statement find the answer. Other plans that renew by themselves include NYTIMES*, ANC*ANCESTRY.COM, CANVA*, DROPBOX*, APPLE.COM/BILL, OPENAI *CHATGPT SUBSCR and SMK*SURVEYMONKEY; a plan that ends and keeps billing is also what STK*SHUTTERSTOCK was about. Other lines are in the table of statement names.
