A charge from LYFT *RIDE on your statement

LYFT *RIDE is a ride booked on a Lyft account that has your card on it. Lines that read LYFT *CANCEL FEE or LYFT *INCREASE TIP are the same company: a fee for a cancelled ride, and what look like tips. Open Ride history in the Lyft app and look for the same day and amount.4

The short answer

If the line says pending on your bank’s site, it is not a charge. Lyft says "a Lyft transaction marked as ‘pending’ isn't a charge": it is a temporary check that the card works, and it should disappear or come back as a refund "within 5-7 business days".1 If it is posted and you did not ride, the card may be on someone else’s Lyft account. Lyft says that when a card was added to a friend’s or family member’s account, "following up with those friends or family is the only way to resolve the issue".2 If nobody you know used it, ask your bank to dispute the charge and replace the card.

What it looks like on a real statement

Lyft’s help pages show one example of a statement line, Lyft 2 rides [DATE] lyft.com/charges.2 The State of Delaware publishes every purchase its employees make on state cards, with the merchant name as the bank received it. When we counted on 3 October 2026 it had 2,781 lines with Lyft in the name, from 24 July 2017 to 27 August 2026, bought by 36 state departments and colleges. None of them is written the way Lyft’s example is, and the line has taken three forms in that period.5

Lyft lines in Delaware’s card data, 2017–2026
What the statement said Lines When
LYFT *RIDE WED 5PM 1,833 24 July 2017 to 4 May 2026. A day of the week and an hour; the same line without the asterisk, LYFT RIDE SUN 12PM, has 392 lines from August 2021 to July 2024
LYFT *1 RIDE 09-08, LYFT *2 RIDES 03-10 178 25 May 2021 to 4 August 2025. A number of rides and a date, month first. Without the asterisk, another 77 lines from August 2021 to June 2024
LYFT *AIRPORT 04-17, LYFT *STANDARD 04-17 200 17 April 2026 to 27 August 2026. The kind of ride and a date. Also *SCHD AIR and *SCHD STD (scheduled rides), *XL RIDE, *COMFORT, *WAITSAVE and *PRIORITY
LYFT *INCREASE TIP 48 21 March 2019 to 30 July 2026. Amounts of $1 to $20, the middle one $5
LYFT *CANCEL FEE, LYFT *CANC FEE 06-05 36 6 June 2018 to 24 July 2026. Charges of $2.50 to $10; four of the lines are refunds

The change in April 2026 was quick: of the lines in Delaware’s data posted in April, 49 had a day and an hour and 11 had a ride type and a date; in May, 2 and 50; in June, none and 40. The day and hour were not explained on any Lyft page we read. In the data, the day of the week matches the day the line was posted, or one or two days before it, in 2,223 of 2,225 lines. So a charge that says FRI 3AM and posted on Saturday is probably Friday’s ride, at 3 in the morning. That is our reading, not Lyft’s statement. Your bank may shorten the line or add a web address to it.

Why there are two lines for one ride, or one line for two

Lyft says that "payment frequency lets you choose between paying once daily for all rides or paying after each individual ride": with daily payment, "all your rides from one day combine into a single charge", and Lyft’s example is $25 plus $15 showing as one $40 charge.2 The two-rides lines in the table are what that looks like in the data. Lyft also says that "certain rides and payment methods may be excluded and charged separately".2

Pending lines are the other source of doubles. Lyft lists what causes a temporary authorisation: creating an account, requesting a ride, updating a payment method, changing the destination, adding a stop, or renting a bike or scooter. You may see several if you request more than one ride.1 If you cancelled a ride, or no driver was found, Lyft says you "may see a pending transaction for the original ride price" and "we’ll never charge you this amount".3

Fees and tips that are not in the ride

Lyft says a cancellation fee may apply if you cancel more than 30 seconds after a driver accepts, after the driver arrives, or if you cancel three or more rides in 15 minutes; a scheduled ride cancelled within an hour of pick-up can also be charged.23 The Ride history does not list these. Lyft’s page on it says "cancellation fees won’t appear, but damage fees will", so a small charge with no ride behind it may be a cancellation fee you can only find on the emailed receipt or by asking Lyft.4 A tip can be added in the app "up to 72 hours after payment".4 Lyft does not say what this line is called; the small amounts in the table look like it.

How to find it and dispute it

  1. Check the ride history, and the email In the Lyft app, select your profile, then Ride history. It goes back to October 2014 and lists a ride once payment has been processed. Lyft emails a receipt after payment, or within 24 hours of the ride; search your email, including spam, for "Lyft" and the amount.4
  2. Ask who else uses the card A card saved on a partner’s, child’s or friend’s Lyft account is charged for their rides. Ask them, and have them take it off their account; Lyft’s own page leaves you no other route.2
  3. Dispute it in the app Select your profile, under Account choose Ride history, pick the ride, and choose Dispute ride charge at the bottom of the screen.2 The page does not give a deadline or say how long a reply takes.
  4. If no ride matches and nobody you know used the card, go to your bank Ask it to dispute the charge as not made by you and to issue a new card. It depends on the bank, the card network and the reason, and a missed deadline can end your options, so ask for the date.

Is this a scam?

The name is real: every one of these lines is Lyft’s own, and the line format is the one on Lyft’s help pages.25 That does not make every such charge a ride you took. A stolen card can pay for a ride as easily as anything else, and a card left on a friend’s account pays for theirs. If there is no ride in the history, no fee in the email and nobody you know is using the card, the charge belongs with your bank.

Why this page is on a site about held money

This site records payment companies that hold back money that belongs to someone else. Lyft is not in the incident record; this page is here so that people searching for a name on a statement find the answer. A food order is DD *DOORDASH or IC* INSTACART; an event ticket is EB *; a deposit for jail phone calls is GTL*INMATE PHONE SVC. An Uber ride is UBER *TRIP. Other lines are in the table of statement names.
