A charge starting with GOOGLE * on your statement
A line that starts with GOOGLE is a payment to Google. The words after it name the
product: YOUTUBE TV, GOOGLE ONE or GOOGLE STORAGE,
GSUITE or WORKSPACE, ADS, CLOUD. When the
words after it are a game or a company you do not know, Google’s pages say it is an app or an
in-app purchase on Google Play, named after the app or its developer.1
Open your Google Account, go to Wallet & subscriptions, and look under Manage purchases and Manage subscriptions.2 If nothing there matches and nobody in your household bought it, report it to Google within 120 days of the charge. After that, Google says to go to your bank.3
Which product the words after GOOGLE point to
The State of Delaware publishes every purchase its employees make on state cards, with the
merchant name as the bank received it. When we counted on 9 October 2026, 1,150 lines started with
GOOGLE, under 221 different names, from 67 state offices, schools and agencies, from
June 2017 to August 2026.4 Grouped by the words after
GOOGLE:
| What the statement said | Lines | What Google’s pages say it is |
|---|---|---|
GOOGLE* ROBLOX, GOOGLE* MINECRAFT, GOOGLE *NORTON SECURE, GOOGLE*KLEI and 22 other names | 288 | Google Play: an app or an in-app purchase, named after its developer or the app;3 a few are other Google products, such as GOOGLE *PROJECT FI (Google Fi) and GOOGLE *VOICE (Google Voice)1 |
GOOGLE *GSUITEDELAWAR, GOOGLE WORKSPACEGATEWAYL | 176 | Google Workspace, “formerly G Suite”, followed by the start of the organization’s web domain5 |
GOOGLE *CLOUD0197A1-3 | 170 | Google Cloud; the letters after CLOUD are the project or billing ID5 |
GOOGLE *YOUTUBE TV, GOOGLE YOUTUBE TV | 146 | YouTube TV6 |
GOOGLE *ADS4970542593 | 124 | Google Ads; the number is a customer number5 |
GOOGLE *GOOGLE STORAGE, GOOGLE *GOOGLE ONE | 86 | Extra storage for Gmail, Drive and Photos (Google One)1 |
GOOGLE *SVCSAPPSDELAW, GOOGLE *SVCSPSD.K12.DE, GOOGLE *SVCSNCCVOTECH. | 76 | Not on any of Google’s lists. SVCSAPPS lines turn into GSUITE lines on the same subscriptions in 2018 (see below); in the others, the letters after SVCS are the start of a school’s web domain |
GOOGLE *PLAY, GOOGLE *DOMAINS, GOOGLE *GOOGLE STORE, GOOGLE *YOUTUBEPREMIUM, GOOGLE *SERVICES | 71 | Play purchases, Google Domains, the Google Store, YouTube Premium; GOOGLE *SERVICES is Google Fiber or YouTube TV1 |
GOOGLE and nothing else | 13 | Not on any of Google’s lists; all 13 are in the 2020 run of game purchases described below |
Google’s own pages give different formats
Google has at least four help pages that say how its charges look, and they do not agree with each other or with real statements:
| Product | Google’s pages say | Delaware’s statements show |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | GOOGLE*YouTube TV on the YouTube TV help page;6 GOOGLE *SERVICES on the Google Pay page1 | Always YOUTUBE TV, with or without the star; GOOGLE *SERVICES only 3 times, the last in 20204 |
| Google Workspace | GOOGLE WORKSPACE and the first 7 letters of the domain;1 GOOGLE *Workspace_ and the domain;5 GOOGLE *GSUITE_ and the domain, cut short7 | GSUITE until December 2025, WORKSPACE from December 2025, with 4 to 8 letters of the domain4 |
| Google One storage | GOOGLE *Google Storage (listed as Google Drive) and GOOGLE* Google Storage (listed as Google One)1 | GOOGLE *GOOGLE STORAGE until June 2024, GOOGLE *GOOGLE ONE from July 20244 |
| Anything from Google | “If the charge isn’t in one of these formats, it didn’t come from Google”, and every format has a star8 | 65 of the 193 Google lines from 2025 and 2026 have no star: GOOGLE YOUTUBE TV, GOOGLE WORKSPACEDELAWARE, GOOGLE ADS86037845174 |
So do not rule a charge out because the star, the spacing or the product name is not exactly as
a Google page shows it. Google itself adds that “some of these descriptors may appear
shortened”.1 What does rule a charge out is a name
that does not start with Google. A line such as PADDLE.NET* GOOGLEADON has GOOGLE in
the middle, but it was billed by Paddle (see PADDLE.NET*), not
by Google.4
The name changed but the subscription did not
The same subscription can show up under a new name, so a new name is not a new charge. Three examples from the state’s data:4
- Storage. The Department of Transportation paid $99.99 every year on or around
9 December. Up to 2023 the line read
GOOGLE *GOOGLE STORAGE; in 2024GOOGLE *GOOGLE ONE; in 2025 justGOOGLE ONE. A $1.99 monthly plan at another office switched names between April and July 2024. - Workspace. Smyrna School District paid $12 once a year, every February. In
2018 the line read
GOOGLE *SVCSAPPSSMYRN, from 2019 to 2025GOOGLE *GSUITESMYRNAE, and in 2026GOOGLE *WORKSPACESMYR. The Forest Service’s $36 monthly charge switched fromGSUITEtoWORKSPACEbetween November and December 2025. - YouTube TV. One school district’s subscription, charged on the 27th, read
GOOGLE* YOUTUBE TV, thenGOOGLE*YOUTUBE TV, thenGOOGLE *YOUTUBE TVin 2021, and mostlyGOOGLE YOUTUBE TVfrom March 2025.
A YouTube TV charge: why the amount moved
YouTube TV charges on the same date every month, or on the last day of a month that is too short; the plan costs $82.99 a month plus tax.9 A free trial turns into a full-price charge on its own, and that date becomes the monthly billing date.10 A pause also ends on its own. Google says “you’ll automatically be charged at your normal monthly price”, and that date becomes the new billing date.11
Two state subscriptions show every price step from 2018 to 2026:4
| First month at this amount | Amount |
|---|---|
| September 2018 (first line in the data) | $40.00 |
| May 2019 | $49.99 |
| August 2020 | $64.99 |
| December 2021, one month only | $49.99 |
| April 2023 | $72.99 |
| January 2025 | $82.99 |
| November 2025, one month only | $62.99 |
The two one-month drops match what YouTube said it would do when Disney’s channels went off the service. In December 2021 it announced it would cut the price “by $15, from $64.99 to $49.99”, and that members who had not yet had the discount would get “a one-time credit”.12 In October 2025 it promised “a $20 credit” if the channels stayed off for long.13 The November 2025 charge in the data is exactly $20 under $82.99. The data shows only the amounts. It does not say why they changed.
Many small charges with an app’s name: Google Play
Google’s Play pages say an app purchase shows as “GOOGLE*App developer name” or “GOOGLE*App
name”.3 That is why the name after GOOGLE
is often a game. In the state’s data, one office’s card carried 267 such lines in 14 days, from
24 June to 7 July 2020: 241 GOOGLE* ROBLOX, 13 GOOGLE* MINECRAFT and
13 that read only GOOGLE. Together they came to $637.33, and 131 of them were
$0.99.4 The data does not say who made them. It does
show what a run of in-app purchases looks like on a statement.
Google’s YouTube help page asks you to check whether “a child may have played a game that resulted in accidental charges”.6 The Play refund rules depend on which it was:
- Someone you know bought it with your account: ask for a refund in Google Play (Payments & subscriptions, Budget & order history, Report a problem). Google says a decision usually takes one day and up to four. After 48 hours, Google says to ask the app’s developer instead.14
- Nobody you know bought it: report it as unauthorized. For card and PayPal charges Google “can only take action … within 120 days from the transaction date”. If it is older than that, Google says to contact your card company’s fraud department. Charges on a phone bill have a 60-day limit.3
Will Google give the money back?
- YouTube TV: “We do not give refunds or credits for partial billing periods.” A refund is offered when features “are defective, or do not perform as stated”, and if it is granted, access ends at once. Card refunds take 3–5 business days, sometimes up to 10. If YouTube TV is billed by your phone or internet company, YouTube “cannot grant a refund”.15
- Google One storage: “In most countries or regions, Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable.”16
- Google Play: see the two cases above.
Of the 1,150 Google lines in the state’s data, 8 are refunds. A $129.99
GOOGLE *NORTON SECURE app charge came back 8 days later, a $12 Workspace charge 14
days later and a $848.94 Cloud charge 27 days later.4
How to find it and stop it
- Look in every Google Account you use Google Account, Wallet & subscriptions, Manage purchases and Manage subscriptions.2 A child’s account managed with Family Link shows nothing there; the family manager sees the purchases instead.2 Google also says to check with family and friends.8
- Cancel the product it names YouTube TV: Settings, Membership, Manage, Cancel membership. You keep access to the end of the period you paid for.11 Google One: Settings, Cancel membership.16 Workspace, Ads and Cloud are cancelled by whoever runs that account at work or school.
- If nothing matches, report it within 120 days Use Google’s unauthorized-charge form; Google says to expect an email “typically within 7 business days”.3
- Go to your bank Ask your bank to dispute the charge and ask what its deadline is. It depends on the bank, the card network and the reason. Past Google’s 120 days, the bank is the only route Google gives.3
Is this a scam?
The names are real: Delaware’s cards paid 1,150 of them.4
A real name does not make every charge yours. A family member’s account, a game on a shared
tablet, a subscription that came back after a pause, or someone using your card number all look
the same on a statement. A short GOOGLE *TEMPORARY HOLD is a pending check that
your card works, and Google says it “will go away”.1
Why this page is on a site about held money
This site records payment companies that hold back money that belongs to someone else. Google is not in the incident record; the closest part of this page is the 120-day limit and the no-refund terms. Apple’s app store shows up as APPLE.COM/BILL; other streaming subscriptions as NETFLIX.COM and HLU*HULUPLUS; Microsoft 365 and Xbox as MICROSOFT*STORE. Facebook and Instagram ads, the other big ad bill on small business cards, show up as FACEBK and a ten-character code; LinkedIn ads and Premium as LINKEDIN and a number. Other lines are in the table of statement names.
