When changing your bank account stops your payouts

Shopify's own number for this is four days. A payments manager at the company, answering merchants in an official session on 14 April 2026, wrote that payouts are held "for 4 days" for sensitive changes such as redirecting them to a new bank account.1 The accounts on this page are from merchants who say they waited weeks and months instead, with sums from $1,600 to $70,000 sitting behind the pause.

Most of them are stuck in one specific place, and it is worth stating up front, because it is the part that has no way out from inside the admin: to change the bank account on file, you must first confirm the details already on file. If those details are wrong, you cannot confirm them, and so you cannot change them.

The general file on this company is the Shopify Payments file. A companion page covers holds whose only exit is a verification step that does not work; this one covers the bank account itself.

1. What Shopify says the hold is

In April 2026 Shopify ran a public question-and-answer session on its community forum about how payouts work. The announcement named, among the things merchants were asking about most, "How to update your bank account without pausing deposits" and listed as one of the session's intended readers: "You recently changed your bank details and something went wrong."2 That is Shopify's own description of a common merchant problem, published by Shopify.

Asked directly during that session whether changing banks triggers a hold, an account posting with Shopify's staff flair answered: "We do place a hold on payouts (for 4 days) for highly sensitive changes like redirecting payouts to a new bank account. This is a security measure. Changing the ownership structure of the entity operating the Shopify Payments account should not interrupt your payouts."1

Four days is the figure to hold the rest of this page against. It is also, on the evidence below, the figure that applies when nothing goes wrong with the account details themselves. It is one of seven different lengths Shopify has stated in public, which are collected, with their sources, on how long a Shopify payouts hold is meant to be.

2. The loop, confirmed in writing by the company

A merchant wrote in June 2023 that they had tried to link a new bank account, that the form asked for the old bank details, that what they entered was rejected as not matching, and that it might have been a mistyping on their own part when they first set the account up. The reply from an account answering for Shopify sets out the trap without disputing any of it:

"I can confirm that you do need to enter the old banking information in order to make changes to the bank account on file. However, since you've mentioned that your payouts are on-hold and the credentials you're entering are incorrect, then it's possible that there was a typo when you initially set up Shopify Payments. If you're unable to enter the correct credentials, then updating the banking details will need to be escalated and handled by one of our specialized teams."3

Nine months later, in the same thread, a second merchant said they had hit it too and that they could not have mistyped anything because they had copied and pasted the account details. An account with Shopify's staff flair replied that changes to bank account information on file must be processed by the payments team, that "it can take a few days", and asked for their ticket number. The merchant replied that it had been almost a week.3

What merchants see at that point is a specific error. One quoted it verbatim in October 2025: "The details of the bank account ending in XXXX must match the information we have on file. Contact support for further assistance."4 Another, in June 2024, described a sharper version — the confirmation email named a different set of final digits than the account actually has, so the digits the system wants are digits that do not exist on any statement they hold.5

Two of them describe the identical mistake two years apart. In April 2024 a merchant running a bricks-and-mortar boutique said they changed their payout account number and left out one digit, could not correct it because they did not know which digit was missing, and that the account went under review on 17 April with "Over $70,000" on hold. They wrote that they could not meet payroll, and asked at what point they should seek legal representation: "There is no one to talk to."6 In May 2026 another merchant described over £10,000 held the same way and named the mechanism exactly: "This creates a verification loop with no exit through the self-service flow."7

One case shows what the hold costs when the trigger is trivially small. A merchant says a payout failed on 16 January 2025 over an error involving €1.11, that payouts were paused from that day, and that three months later they were "stuck with my 4700 EUR on hold because of 1.11 EUR charge error" — with the shop still open, still shipping, and the admin not even offering a retry button.8

4. Nobody who got out has come back to say how

This is the most concrete thing we found, and it is a thing only a record keeper notices: the same threads are still being answered by newcomers, not by anyone who was released.

A merchant opened a thread on 26 September 2025 saying they had entered a wrong account number, could not fix it, and had $2,000 of sales they could not reach. On 29 June 2026 — nine months later — another merchant replied underneath: "I have the same issue now and need support ASAP. Currently waited two weeks for the support follow up and nothing. Please help advise on how long you waited and how it was resolved." They were never answered.9

That same merchant had, four days earlier, posted the same question under a different thread from October 2025, and on 1 July 2026 opened their own thread reporting sixteen days of waiting on the message "Payouts paused because your account number was incorrect".10 Meanwhile the author of the October 2025 thread had themselves been asked the same question, on 1 May 2026, by the merchant with over £10,000 held: "Hey, actually have exactly the same issue, what happened in the end?" That question has no reply either.4

Four merchants, across nine months, asking each other how it ended. In the threads we read for this page, none of them says.

Why several merchants quoted above are not in the table

The reports in sections 2 and 4 state no amount, no hold period they were given and no closure date, and an entry goes into the record only when at least one of those is present. They are quoted here because we opened and read every post on each thread ourselves; they are not counted as cases. One further account, from a consultant describing a client's hold of more than $10,000, is left out for a different reason: the money is not theirs, and this record takes first-hand accounts only.

5. If this is happening to you

  1. Write down the date the pause started and the figure behind it, today. Every merchant above who could state both was able to make the delay measurable against Shopify's own four-day number. That comparison is the whole of the argument.
  2. Ask support, in writing, for the last four digits of the account on file. The loop exists because you are asked to confirm something you cannot see. If they will not give you the digits, ask them to record in the ticket that they declined to, and keep that reply.
  3. Reply inside the existing ticket rather than opening new ones. Merchants in these threads report that new chats create duplicate tickets; we cannot verify what that does to the queue, and neither could they — but every one of them who opened a fresh chat daily reports getting the same answer.
  4. Take it to a regulator if your country has one for this. In the United States, a CFPB complaint obliges many companies to answer in writing, though Shopify's payments arm is not in that database — that page sets out which door applies to whom. In the United Kingdom, the Financial Ombudsman Service has published decisions on held funds, and what gets corrected in them is narrow: the time beyond the firm's own stated period. Shopify's own stated period here is four days.
  5. File it here. Add your case to the record with the date, the figure and a source. And if your money is released, come back and say so — the gap this page documents is that nobody ever does.
