When the only way out of the hold is broken
Your payouts are paused until you verify your identity, and the button that is supposed to let you do that does nothing. The merchants below were told by Shopify support that this is a fault on Shopify’s side, not on theirs. Their money stayed where it was while it was unfixed — in one case for more than three months.
This page is a record of what those merchants wrote down, with dates and figures, and of what support told them in writing. The general file on this company — how holds start and what the agreement says — is the Shopify Payments file; what happens when a stated hold period runs out is on a separate page.
1. The entries in the record where the release route failed
| File | Amount stated | What was broken | Status when last written about |
|---|---|---|---|
| HF-2026-0073 | Over €5,000 | The business details page loaded blank, with no fields; the verification emails support said they were sending never arrived, while other Shopify email did | Held, 10 January 2026 |
| HF-2026-0074 | $1,178.84 | Identity verified and confirmed by email on 26 February 2026; the banner stayed, and the button turned into a loading circle and died | Held, 31 May 2026 |
| HF-2026-0075 | $499 | The document upload link is only sent to the email address on the original account, which had been suspended and which they could no longer open | Held, 6 July 2025 |
| HF-2026-0076 | $200,000 | Admin asked for identity verification while the button did not work; support said nothing further was needed, so they could not tell whether the request was real | Released, 29 July 2026 |

2. What support told them, in their own words
One merchant with over €5,000 frozen from 3 January 2026 says the page they were sent to complete verification — Update Business Details — was completely blank, with no fields and no buttons, and that the verification emails support kept promising never arrived at any address, while order confirmations and chat transcripts kept arriving normally. They say they contacted support seventeen times in seven days and quote one agent describing it as "a known sync error that prevents you from complying with a request you can’t even see", and another confirming in writing that both the page and the email delivery were failing. A third told them, when asked how long this could go on: "We currently do not have any maximum wait time."1
A second merchant, three months into a hold, says an advisor finally looked closely and found that a verification session had been created on Shopify’s side but had never launched, so no documents had ever been submitted. They had already tried Chrome and Safari, incognito windows, different computers and their phone, and had opened the browser’s developer tools: clicking the button fires no network request at all. They say the Merchant Trust email they later received directed them back to the payouts page — that is, back to the same dead button.2
A third says their payouts stopped on 6 March 2026 and that updating their bank details required a verification email which Shopify’s own system kept bouncing. They gave two working addresses; neither ever received one. They record advisors discovering the bounce on 14 March, confirming it cleared on 22 March, and discovering it still active on 24 March.3
None of the three states an amount, a stated hold period or a closure date, and an entry only goes into the record when at least one of those is present. They are quoted here because we read every post on each thread ourselves; they are not counted as cases.
3. The same failure, across at least eleven months
These are not one bad week. Below are the dated first-hand reports we opened and read in full for this page, in the order they were posted. Every one describes payouts held behind a verification step the merchant could not complete.
- 22 September 2025. "The page just refreshes and I never get access to the form to upload my documents." Four other merchants reply on the same thread between 24 September and 10 October saying they have the same problem; one of them had then been waiting almost two weeks.4
- 3 January 2026. Blank verification page, undelivered emails, €5,000+ frozen, 17 support contacts in seven days.1
- 24 February to 31 May 2026. Verified on 26 February with an email confirming it; told on 27 February to expect a fix in two to three business days; told on 16 March there was no timeframe and to stop opening tickets. $1,178.84 still locked on 31 May.5
- 6 to 25 March 2026. Verification emails bouncing inside Shopify’s own system; 8+ advisors over three weeks.3
- 18 July to 15 August 2026. Three months of a verification session that is created and never launches; support confirms the documents were never received because of the fault.2
- 29 July 2026. A Plus merchant with close to $200,000 paused reports the same dead button on the same admin screen, while being told nothing further is needed from them.6
The earliest and the latest of those are eleven months apart. We are not in a position to say whether they share one cause, and no merchant on any of these threads was ever given one.
4. The part that is not a glitch
A broken button is a bug, and bugs happen. What the accounts above have in common is something separate from the bug: while it is unfixed, the money stays held, and the merchant carries that. In one case the merchant says they kept paying a monthly subscription mainly to keep a support conversation open so the funds would not become unreachable.5 In another, the merchant records being told that opening further escalations can push a case further down the queue — so pressing harder and waiting quietly carry the same answer.1
One related shape is worth naming, because it is the same problem without a button in it: a merchant with $499 outstanding on a deactivated store could not complete verification because the document link is sent only to the email address on the original account, a mailbox that had since been suspended. Three months of live chats did not get the link re-sent anywhere else.7
5. What to do while it is broken
Nobody can promise you a way to make a hold end, and none of the merchants here found one. These steps are the ones that preserve your position and your evidence.
- Get the fault stated in writing, in the ticket. Ask support two narrow questions: what state the verification session is in on their side, and whether any documents have been received. A session that was created and never launched looks identical in their notes to a merchant who never got round to it, and only the second one is your fault.
- Record what the button does. Open the browser’s developer tools, turn on Preserve log, click it, and screenshot the result. "Nothing happens" is a description; "no network request is sent on click" is a reproducible fault, and one merchant on these threads got that far and put it in their ticket.2
- Ask for the verification to be sent as a direct link, to an address you control. Two of the accounts here failed at the delivery step rather than the verification step, and one merchant could never be reached at all because the address on file was gone.
- Keep the email address and the bank account on the account alive. If either one stops working before the money moves, it is the merchant, not the platform, who is left without a route — that is the whole of HF-2026-0075, and it is also what happens to some merchants on day 120. A wrong digit in the bank account is its own version of this, with no way to correct it from inside the admin: see holds that start at the payout bank account.
- Take it to a regulator if your country has one for this. In the United States, a CFPB complaint obliges many companies to answer in writing, though Shopify’s payments arm is not in that database — that page sets out which door applies to whom. In the United Kingdom, the Financial Ombudsman Service has published decisions on held funds, and what they correct is narrow.
- File it here. Add your case to the record with the date, the figure and a link. A fault that eleven months of individual tickets could not get named is exactly the kind that only becomes visible when the reports are counted in one place.
