A charge from AMAZON PRIME on your statement
AMAZON PRIME* followed by a nine-character code is the fee for an Amazon
Prime membership. Amazon lists it as AMAZON PRIME*A1B2C3D4Eamzn.com/bill, beside
a second name, AMZ*Prime Shipping Club amzn.com/bill.1
When a month or a year of membership ends, Amazon charges for the next one. Prime is $14.99 a month or
$139 a year, before any sales tax.4 AMAZON PRIME PMTS and AMAZON PRIME with no code are, in the data we checked,
money coming back.
Sign in to Amazon and open your Prime Membership page. To stop it, use Cancel Your Prime Membership and follow the prompts.2 If no one on the account has used Prime since the last charge, Amazon refunds the whole fee, in three to five business days.23 If no account you can sign in to has Prime, tell your bank.
What it looks like on a real statement
St. Tammany Parish Public Schools in Louisiana publishes its card transactions. One card paid a monthly Prime fee three times in 2024, then got the third one back a week later:12
| Date | Statement line | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 17 July 2024 | AMAZON PRIME RS7RP6XR2 AMZN.COM/BILL, WA | 16.29 |
| 17 August 2024 | AMAZON PRIME RU9JN3P81 AMZN.COM/BILL, WA | 16.29 |
| 17 September 2024 | AMAZON PRIME SO3Y22ZV3 AMZN.COM/BILL, WA | 16.29 |
| 24 September 2024 | AMAZON PRIME AMZN.COM/BILL, WA | −16.29 |
$16.29 is $1.30 more than the $14.99 monthly price; Amazon says Prime may be subject to sales tax in some states.4 Each charge has a new code. The refund has none.
Four names since 2017, and which ones are refunds
The State of Delaware publishes every purchase its employees make on state cards. When we counted on 10 October 2026, Prime had used four names there:11
| Name on the record | Lines | When, and what they were |
|---|---|---|
AMAZONPRIME MEMBERSHIP | 235 | June 2017 to July 2018: 180 fees and 55 refunds |
AMAZON PRIME | 376 | The fee from August 2018 to December 2019; from 2020 to January 2025, 122 refunds and 2 fees |
AMAZON PRIME* and a code | 653 | From 18 December 2019: every one a fee |
AMAZON PRIME PMTS | 25 | From 11 March 2025: every one a refund |
So since 2020, a Prime line with a code has been a charge, and a Prime line without one has almost
always been money back. Amazon’s own table of names does not list AMAZON PRIME PMTS.1
One annual line shows three of the names in turn. Delaware’s parks division has been charged on 17
September each year: $99 as AMAZONPRIME MEMBERSHIP in 2017; $119 as AMAZON
PRIME in 2018 and 2019; $119 as AMAZON PRIME*MU6767W80 in 2020 and as another
AMAZON PRIME* code in 2021; then $139 in 2022, 2023 and
2024.11
Why the amount went up, and when it did not
Prime’s US price has gone up three times since 2018. Twice, the price for members who already paid changed on a later date than for new members. Delaware’s renewals land on both sides of each change:
| Change | For existing members | Delaware renewals |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly $10.99 to $12.99, announced 19 January 20188 | The report gives no separate date | A court office: $10.99 on 8 February 2018, $12.99 on 8 March 201811 |
| Annual $99 to $119, new members from 11 May 20189 | Renewals from 16 June 20189 | $99 on 20 May and 3 June 2018; $119 on 17 June 201811 |
| Monthly $12.99 to $14.99 and annual $119 to $139, new members from 18 February 202210 | Renewals after 25 March 202210 | $119 on 7 March 2022, $139 on 27 March 2022; monthly $12.99 on 19 March, $14.99 on 19 April 202211 |
Prime’s terms say that if the fee goes up, Amazon will tell you before the renewal, and you can cancel before it takes effect.3 Other amounts are other Prime plans: Prime for Young Adults is $7.49 a month or $69 a year, and Prime Access, for people on EBT, Medicaid, SNAP and some other programs, is $6.99 a month.4
Will Amazon give the money back?
Sometimes the whole fee. Amazon’s cancel page says paid members who “haven’t used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period”, processed in three to five business days.2 The Prime terms (last updated 14 August 2026) add two details:3
- Cancel within 3 business days of signing up, or of a free trial turning paid, and Amazon refunds the full fee, but “may charge you (or withhold from your refund) the value of Prime benefits used” in those days.
- Cancel at any other time and the full fee comes back “only if you and your account did not make any eligible purchases or take advantage of Prime benefits since your latest Prime membership charge.” Otherwise the fee is “non-refundable except as expressly set forth in these Terms.”
In Delaware’s data, 230 of the 267 Prime refunds can be matched to a fee of the same amount from the same office in the 60 days before. Half came back within 10 days of the fee, and 87 within six days.11
The FTC settlement: how that money arrives
In September 2025 Amazon agreed to pay up to $1.5 billion in refunds and a $1 billion civil penalty to settle the FTC’s case that it enrolled people in Prime without consent and made it hard to cancel. By September 2026 it had paid out more than $845 million.56 A revised order approved in September 2026 raised the most one person can get from $51 to $200, and added people who used 11 to 20 Prime benefits in a year, with payments to them starting on 1 October 2026.6
- Who: a US Prime customer who, between 23 June 2019 and 23 June 2025, signed up through one of the challenged sign-up screens or tried and failed to cancel online, and used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12 months after joining.5
- How it arrives: a mailed check, or an electronic payment through PayPal or Venmo.
Nothing to file. A payment expires 60 days after it is
issued.5 The FTC does not list a credit to your card, so an
AMAZON PRIME PMTSrefund on your statement is not this payment. - When: by April 2027. If not enough of the money has been accepted by February 2027, people who already accepted a payment get up to $149 more, starting by April 2027.56
- Questions: the settlement administrator, at admin@SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com or 1-888-999-8094. Amazon’s customer service says it has no information on eligibility or payments.57 The FTC says it is not contacting anyone about these refunds, and that no one from Amazon will ask you for money to get one.5
Other Amazon subscriptions that are not Prime
A Prime Video channel or Kindle Unlimited is billed monthly as an Amazon digital service, and shows in Your Digital Orders.1 Canceling Prime does not stop them: “Subscriptions on Prime Video, like Paramount+, will continue once your Prime Membership ends.”2 In Delaware’s data these came under their own names:11
| Names on the record | Lines |
|---|---|
PRIME VIDEO with or without a code, PRIME VIDEO CHANNELS, PRIME VIDEO TVOD | 146 |
AMZN DIGITAL*, AMAZON DIGITAL SVCS and similar | 172 |
AUDIBLE or AUDIBLE US, with or without a code | 146 |
KINDLE SVCS*, KINDLE UNLTD*, AMAZON SERVICES-KINDLE and similar | 72 |
AMAZON MUSIC* | 58 |
AMAZON KIDS*, AMZNFREETIME*, AMAZON FREETIME UNLTD | 29 |
How to find it and stop it
- Find the account Sign in to Amazon and open the Prime Membership page. Try every Amazon account in the household; Prime bought by someone else on your card shows only in their account.
- Check who bills it If you joined through Google Play on Android, cancel through Google’s subscriptions page; if Prime came with another company’s service, contact that company.2 A Google Play purchase shows up as GOOGLE *.
- Cancel before the renewal date Use Cancel Your Prime Membership and follow the prompts.2 The terms say you can cancel any time before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.3 Cancel any Prime Video channels separately.
- If it is not your account, go to your bank Ask your bank to dispute the charge and ask what its deadline is. It depends on the bank, the card network and the reason.
Is this a scam?
The names are real: a Louisiana school system and offices in 51 Delaware departments and school districts have paid them.1112 A real name does not make every charge yours. Start from the Amazon website or app, not from a call, text or email about a Prime renewal or a refund. If no Amazon account you can sign in to has Prime, treat the charge as one you did not make.
Why this page is on a site about held money
This site records payment companies that hold back money that belongs to someone else. Amazon is not in the incident record; the closest part of this page is the refund rule and the FTC case about canceling. Amazon orders are on their own page: AMAZON MKTPL or AMZN MKTP US. Other streaming lines are NETFLIX.COM, HLU*HULUPLUS and DISNEY PLUS. Walmart’s membership shows as WMT PLUS or WALMART MEMBER, and a Sam’s Club membership as SAMS CLUB RENEWAL. Other lines are in the table of statement names.
